About Playing Australia

Playing Australia is the Australian Government's national touring program for the performing arts. It is designed to assist the touring of performing arts across state and territory boundaries where this is currently not commercially viable and there is a demonstrated public demand. A principal objective of Playing Australia is to support tours to regional and remote Australia.

From theatre to music and opera, dance, puppetry and circus, Playing Australia has assisted the touring of performing arts across Australia since 1992.

The Minister for the Environment, Heritage and the Arts announced the Playing Australia Round 34 successful applicants on 17 September 2008.

The Committee has provided feedback on applications in Round 34 pdfPlaying Australia Round 34 Committee Report (PDF - 28 KB) pdf (Word - 61 KB).

Round 35 now open - closing date 1 December 2009

Changes to the Playing Australia application and submission processes

The Playing Australia guidelines, application form and budget spreadsheet look a little different this Round.

The guidelines are now contained in a single document – there are no secondary explanatory notes. While there is no new information contained in the guidelines some matters have been more clearly stated. For example, you will find that the guidelines now clearly articulate that Playing Australia cannot cover the cost of contingencies.

The application form and budget spreadsheet have both been redesigned to make providing information easier. You must provide your budget information on the NEW template provided - which now includes a travel worksheet that supersedes the Travel Calculator. Formulae embedded in the spreadsheet will ensure accuracy and consistency of figures. No additional information is being requested. If you wish to provide budget information in addition to that required by the Playing Australia template you can include it with your application as an additional supporting document.

To increase efficiency you have been asked to limit your responses to the questions in the application.

All applicants are required to provide the original completed and signed application form and associated documents, a copy on CD or memory stick and one copy of each of any supporting materials. These may be emailed or hand delivered to the Department by 1 December 2009. Posted applications must be POST-MARKED on or before that date. Support material must arrive with the application and will not be returned. Late applications will not be accepted.

How does Playing Australia work?

There are two funding rounds each year, advertised nationally.

The Minister responsible for the Arts generally announces funding in April and September for tours commencing from July and January respectively.

An advisory committee, appointed by the Minister responsible for the Arts, assesses applications against the published program guidelines, through a competitive selection process.

The Department also administers other cultural funding programs:
