Funding assistance

Funding assistance

Assistance is provided in the form of a direct grant or as a guarantee against loss.

Funding is usually provided for the net touring costs, which normally include travel allowances, transport fares and freight, and accommodation. However, additional funding may be provided up to the deficit of a tour where a strong case is made, and provided costs can be directly related to the tour.

Applicants are encouraged to apply for a guarantee against loss (GAL) under which the Commonwealth agrees to meet verified losses incurred on an approved touring program up to a specified amount. This may be particularly appropriate in the case of productions which show potential to break even or produce profit.

Generally, funding is not available for development or administrative costs, or overheads of the company or presenter. Playing Australia does not provide funding for commissioning new works or for tours which are predominantly schools-based.

What makes a tour eligible for assistance?

The tour may be interstate, extending the company's regular touring circuit to new audiences, and may include destinations in the home state of the touring company. The venues or presenters should be fully involved (financially if possible) in the proposed tour. Where community or non-traditional venues are involved, there should be an indication of community support for the proposed tour.

Touring plans, including itinerary and budget details, should be well developed before applying.

Generally, the performance should be complete and ready for touring.

For applications for solely intrastate tours, the level of contribution from the relevant state/territory government will be taken into consideration. Applications demonstrating a matching contribution will provide a more compelling argument for support.

Regional touring is a priority

Tours which involve regional destinations are a priority for funding. Tour organisers are encouraged to contact regional arts organisations, touring agencies and venue networks for more information on developing or extending tours into regional and remote Australia
