National Film and Sound Archive
The National Film and Sound Archive (NFSA) commenced operations as a stand alone statutory authority on 1 July 2008. Legislation establishing the new agency was passed by the Australian Parliament in March 2008.
The NFSA is the Government’s primary agency for the development, preservation, maintenance and promotion of the national collection of audiovisual material. It was established as a collecting institution in 1984 and until 2003 it was administered by the relevant Government department responsible for the arts. In 2003, it became part of the Australian Film Commission.
