Name change for Indigenous languages and visual arts funding
The Maintenance of Indigenous Languages and Records (MILR) program is now called Indigenous Languages Support (ILS)
The National Arts and Crafts Industry Support (NACIS) program is now called Indigenous Visual Arts Industry Support (IVAIS).
Why the change?
This year, to make it simpler to apply for funding from Office for the Arts (OFTA), there is a single set of guidelines for OFTA’s three funding streams: Indigenous culture, languages and visual arts.
Along with the new guidelines, the names for Indigenous languages and visual arts funding (previously MILR and NACIS) have been simplified to more clearly state what OFTA supports. The new guidelines provide information about applying for funding through one or more of OFTA’s Indigenous funding streams.

OFTA invites applications for funding under the following funding categories:
- Indigenous Culture Support (ICS)
- Indigenous Languages Support (ILS) (formerly the Maintenance of Indigenous Languages and Records program)
- Indigenous Visual Arts Industry Support (IVAIS) (formerly the National Arts and Crafts Industry Support program).
Please ensure you read the guidelines (1.2 MB PDF) prior to applying.
In addition to the general eligibility requirements listed at the front of the guidelines, specific eligibility criteria for each funding stream are listed under the funding category descriptions.
This year, applicants are strongly encouraged to apply using an electronic submission (eSub). This form enables you to apply for funding in one or more of the culture, languages and visual arts funding categories. Please refer to the guidelines for further directions on how to apply using the eSub. The eSub will be available to applications for Indigenous culture, languages and visual arts funding from 29 October.
Applicants can choose to apply for annual or triennial funding. It is recommended that applicants contact OFTA on 1800 006 992 to discuss their proposal prior to submitting.
Outcomes are expected to be advised in June 2012.
