More about the Indigenous Broadcasting Program
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander oral culture and traditions remain strong and Indigenous broadcasting services are taking those voices, stories, songs and information into communities around Australia.
The IBP aims to strengthen and support Indigenous broadcasters so that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people can access culturally appropriate and regionally relevant broadcasting services in the same way the wider Australian public does.
It supports the production and broadcasting of radio programs promoting Indigenous languages and helps to maintain a flow of information to Indigenous Australians on how to access essential services like housing, health, legal support, and education.
The IBP currently funds over 56 Indigenous organisations in the following areas of activity:
- the operation and administration of Indigenous owned and controlled community radio services - including Remote Indigenous Broadcasting Services (RIBS) units - that meet the program guidelines;
- Remote Indigenous Media Organisations (RIMOs) which provide technical support and training to RIBS;
- peak bodies that promote and service the interests of their Indigenous radio station membership;
- radio news and other content for broadcast on Indigenous radio stations;
- the operation of Imparja Television including satellite uplink facilities for NITV and community radio services, Indigenous Community Television; and
- training for Indigenous broadcasters through accredited training providers.
