Indigenous Remote Radio Replacement Program

Indigenous Remote Radio Replacement Program

Remote Indigenous Broadcasting Services are an important resource in many Indigenous communities. Broadcasts promote language maintenance and cultural development and provide media and communications training. They also provide entertainment and help disseminate health, education and other public information to Indigenous communities.

Under the Indigenous Remote Radio Replacement Program the Australian Government is providing $3.3 million over three years to June 2009 to replace obsolete equipment and ensure improved and more reliable remote Indigenous radio services in 79 locations.

Most of these Indigenous organisations are located in very remote areas of Australia and the Torres Strait Islands, where they often provide the only relevant news and community information in their communities.

The Community Broadcasting FoundationExternal link, an independent not-for-profit funding agency, has been contracted to manage the program's rollout.
