Indigenous Remote Radio Replacement Program
Remote Indigenous Broadcasting Services are an important resource in many Indigenous communities. Broadcasts promote language maintenance and cultural development and provide media and communications training. They also provide entertainment and help disseminate health, education and other public information to Indigenous communities.
Under the Indigenous Remote Radio Replacement Program the Australian Government provided $3.3 million to replace obsolete equipment and ensure improved and more reliable remote Indigenous radio services in a number of selected locations. The program is due for completion in December 2010.
Most of these Indigenous organisations are located in very remote areas of Australia and the Torres Strait Islands, where they often provide the only relevant news and community information in their communities.
The Community Broadcasting Foundation
, an independent not-for-profit funding agency, has been contracted to manage the program's rollout.
