Indigenous Visual Arts Special Initiative 2007-08
The Indigenous Visual Arts Special Initiative complements the support provided to Indigenous art centres and arts support organisations through the National Arts and Crafts Industry Support (NACIS) program. The Special Initiative supports one-off projects, including upgrades of facilities, training for young and emerging artists and art centre workers, and specific marketing initiatives. While these one-off projects are short term and discrete, their benefits are felt long after the completion of the project.
Additional funding of $310 000 was made available in 2007–08 through the Visual Arts and Craft Strategy (VACS). It is indicated in the table below where projects are funded through VACS.
The Special Initiative is a national and competitive funding program with offers of funding based on merit. The Minister for the Environment, Heritage and the Arts makes the funding decisions.
In 2007–08, projects were funded in each category as follows:
- Upgrade of facilities: 17 projects supported with $866 497 of funding;
- Training: 5 projects supported with $251 532 of funding;
- Marketing: 4 projects supported with $126 821 of funding; and
- Other one-off projects: 2 projects supported with $65 150 of funding.
