National Indigenous television

National Indigenous Television (NITV) aims to boost the Indigenous television production sector across Australia and to have a positive impact on Indigenous culture and identity.

Launched on 13 July 2007, NITV is available as a distinct television channel in remote areas via the Imparja Television narrowcast service and nationally on pay television via Foxtel Channel 180, Austar and Optus. The service may also be accessed via:

NITV commissions, produces and aggregates Indigenous television content, providing Indigenous news, children’s TV, documentaries, drama, sport and other entertainment reflecting the breadth of Indigenous communities.

The Australian Government provided $48.5m over four years to 30 June 2010 to support NITV, Australia's first national Indigenous television service.

On 11 May 2010 the Australian Government announced in the Budget that it would provide funding of $15.2 million to NITV for a further 12 months, until 30 June 2011 pending a national review into the Government’s investment into the Indigenous Broadcasting and Media sector. The review will be undertaken by an independent reviewer and administered by a steering committee chaired by the Department of the Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts, with representation from the Department of Broadband, Communication and the Digital Economy, the Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs and the Australian Communications and Media Authority. Consultation with the sector will be undertaken as part of the review process.
