Indigenous TV broadcasters establish international network

Australian National Indigenous Television’s CEO Pat Turner has delivered a key note address at the recent World Indigenous Television Broadcasting Conference in New Zealand.

Indigenous broadcasters from Australia, New Zealand, Taiwan, South Africa, Canada, Hawaii, Norway, England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland, Brazil, Fiji, USA and Norway attended the conference which was held in late March.

The Department of the Environment, Heritage, Water and the Arts was represented at the conference by Bill McGinnis, the Department’s Indigenous Broadcasting Manager.

Pat Turner’s address was well received and stimulated interest in National Indigenous Televisions (NITV) which is funded by the Department.

One of the exciting outcomes of the conference was the establishment of an international network of Indigenous TV broadcasters which will promote the Indigenous television sector and be a vehicle for sharing programming, experiences, templates and technical information. This World Indigenous Television Broadcasting Network (WITBN) will stage its next conference in 2010 in Taiwan to be followed by a 2012 conference in Canada.
