The Australian Government is committed to an agenda of social inclusion, to provide opportunities for all Australians to participate in our society.

As part of this approach, the Government wants to strengthen its relationship with the non-profit sector through the development of a national compact.

The compact is expected to provide a framework for a more collaborative approach between the Government and the non-profit sector and to set out the principles and commitments which will underpin that relationship.

The Parliamentary Secretary for Social Inclusion and the Voluntary Sector, Senator the Hon Ursula Stephens, is working in partnership with the National Compact Joint Taskforce to develop a draft framework for the compact.

Mr John Atkin, Managing Director of Trust Company Limited, chairs the taskforce, which includes representatives from local government, trade unions, government agencies and non-profit organisations.

The taskforce expects to complete a framework for constitution by late July 2009, with broad-based consultations on the draft framework taking place from August to November 2009.

It is anticipated that the draft national compact and associated work plan will be presented to the Government for consideration in December 2009.
