The Minister for the Arts has announced some changes to the Government’s support for the arts.
18 March 2017
The Minister for the Arts has announced some changes to the Government’s support for the arts, involving the Australia Council and the Department of Communications and the Arts.
These changes will help pave the way for a collaborative focus on the priority work of connecting the arts sector to the broader innovation agenda.
Changes announced include the transfer of the majority of funds from the Catalyst—Australian Arts and Culture Fund to the Australia Council. Catalyst has successfully supported a broad range of arts projects, especially those by small to medium arts organisations, and these existing commitments will continue to be honoured. The Department and the Australia Council will work together to ensure a smooth transition to the new arrangements.
As part of the new arrangements, the Department will retain $2 million per year to provide an alternative avenue of funding for organisations that may not be eligible for support through the Australia Council. This may include the galleries, libraries, archives and museums sector and some regional and community, education and health organisations.
