Organisations that preserve, promote and celebrate cultural expression though Indigenous languages and arts are encouraged to apply for grant funding to support their work or to develop specific projects.
Next year is the International Year of Indigenous Languages, declared by the United Nations to raise awareness of the crucial role languages play in people’s daily lives. In Australia, of the estimated original 250 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages, only around 120 are still spoken. Of these languages still spoken approximately 90 per cent are considered endangered.
ILA program funding is vital for revitalising and maintaining our Indigenous languages and in ensuring continued support of Indigenous language workers and community-led language programs.
Each year, the Australian Government invests over $20 million through the ILA program to promote participation in, and maintenance of, Australia’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures through languages and arts.
Applications close on Monday 11 February 2019 at 11.59pm AEDT.
