To celebrate the launch, we spoke to the NMA’s Senior Curator Sophie Jensen about the importance of the collection to Australia’s national heritage and the features of the refurbished main hall.
The NMA’s National Historical Collection has more than 200,000 items with 5,000 items on display and around half the collection is available online.
The items are collected and displayed under three key themes:
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and history
Australian history post 1788
People and the environment
Each of these themes intersect to bring together the stories of Australia’s history. The main hall reflects these themes and the new Defining Moments interactive wall gives Australians the opportunity to engage more closely.
