Education Minister Dan Tehan says this investment in languages education is important during the International Year of Indigenous Languages.
The funding will be used to research the professional capabilities of Indigenous languages teachers across Australia and develop resources to support Indigenous language teaching and learning in schools.
‘Learning a traditional language can give Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people a sense of belonging so our Government is supporting Indigenous Language teachers to keep these unique languages alive,’ Minister Tehan said.
The funding is part of a $2.18 million language package aimed at boosting the learning of Indigenous and foreign languages in schools.
