Arts Minister Senator Mitch Fifield has released a statement on the death of Dr John Hirst, an Emeritus Scholar and eminent historian.
Dr John Hirst was an Emeritus Scholar, La Trobe University, an eminent historian and a significant contributor to a number of Australia's collecting and cultural institutions.
Dr Hirst was a member of the Old Parliament House Advisory Council since 2015 where he made a strong contribution to the galleries of the Museum of Australian Democracy.
From 2003 to 2009, Dr Hirst was a member of the National Museum of Australia Council, serving as Deputy Chair from 2004 to 2009 and continued as an historical advisor to the Museum after concluding his term on the Council. He also served as a member of the Film Australia Board from 1999 until 2008.
Dr Hirst added great value to Australia's cultural landscape and was a mentor to many historians as well as to many who work in our national collecting institutions.
