Weaving is in Flora Warria’s blood. The Mua Island artist has been mastering the craft since she was a child and wants the ancient practice to continue forever.

‘My passion is for the young ladies to grab a hold of it, to preserve it for the next generation onwards,’ Flora said.

‘[We] must not let it die down. Because the knowledge has come from ancient times.’

Flora learned her craft from the older women in her Torres Strait Island community.

‘When I do weaving and gathering of the materials it connects me and I feel connected to the land. I'm preserving the knowledge of our old people.’

Moa Arts, Art of Mua Island is supported by the Australian Government’s Indigenous Visual Arts Industry Support Program.
