The laws will bring more Australian stories to our screens and support the local screen industry.
The Communications Legislation Amendment (Australian Content Requirement for Subscription Video On Demand (Streaming) Services) Bill has passed Parliament.
Under the new laws, streaming services with more than one million Australian subscribers will be required to invest at least 10% of their total program expenditure for Australia—or 7.5% their revenue—on new local drama, children's, documentary, arts and educational programs.
The Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) will also receive a $50 million funding boost over 3 years from 2026–27 to support the production of new Australian children's and drama content.
These measures will ensure that no matter which service Australians are watching, there will be Australian content available. The requirements will support arts workers and ensure the production of quality local stories in Australia.
The new laws deliver on a commitment under the National Cultural Policy, Revive, to set local content requirements on streaming services.
