Over $535 million to be delivered across the nine institutions over four years.
The Government will invest more than $535 million over four years from 2023-24 and more than $117 million per annum ongoing and indexed from 2027-28 to protect nine National Collecting Institutions.
The funding outcome was foreshadowed in the Government’s new National Cultural Policy – Revive: A place for every story, a story for every place, which committed the Government to assessing these Institutions future funding needs in the 2023-24 Budget. This funding supports Institutions that sustain our arts, culture and heritage and is consistent with the strong cultural infrastructure key pillar of the Policy.
This funding will be provided to the Australian National Maritime Museum, Bundanon Trust, Museum of Australian Democracy (Old Parliament House), National Archives of Australia, National Film and Sound Archive, National Gallery of Australia, National Library of Australia, National Museum of Australia and the National Portrait Gallery of Australia.
These Institutions hold a special place in Australia’s cultural infrastructure as they preserve, share and celebrate Australia’s stories. These stories give meaning and context to Australia’s history and to the place of each Australian in that history. Through telling Australia’s stories, the Institutions also play an important role in supporting truth-telling for First Nations peoples and in fostering international cultural collaboration and exchange.
The funding will help provide certainty for the Institutions and ensure jobs are protected, financial obligations can be met and much-needed safety improvements to some of Australia’s most iconic buildings can be undertaken. It also secures the future of Trove.
