Over $1.9 million will fuel the tours of eight performing arts shows thanks to the Australia Council’s Playing Australia program.

Recipients of the latest round of funding through the Australia Council's Playing Australia program span music, theatre, dance and slam poetry, and will enable diverse audiences in over 117 locations across the country to experience world-class performances in their own community.

The projects will also provide an invaluable opportunity to empower both seasoned and emerging creatives to showcase their talent, and to take their careers to the next level.

They include:

  • 'The Sunshine Club' – an award winning Australian musical play written & directed by Noonuccal Nuugi man Wesley Enoch AM and supported by a majority First Nations creative team. The 12-person talented ensemble includes Aboriginal & non-Aboriginal performers and a 3-piece band.
  • Australian Poetry Slam Tour of regional and metro areas – Poetry slams transcend location, cultural background, age and education. They empower people to express their stories and engage constructively with their communities. Through a network of libraries, youth centres, festivals, councils, and regional arts offices, this project will reach regional and metropolitan communities in Victoria, New South Wales, Tasmania, and the Northern Territory.
  • 2023 National Tour of 'Mr Stink' by Roald Dahl – CDP Theatre Producers will tour Roald Dahl's Mr Stink for young audiences with comprehensive tours in 2023, ensuring young people in regional areas have access to a variety of artistic experiences.

Performing arts has the power to inspire, captivate and educate audiences, which is why the Government is committed to investing in programs that directly increase arts access, particularly throughout regional and remote Australia.
