The program helps galleries around the country to loan works from the national art collection.
The National Gallery of Australia's Sharing the National Collection program has reached over one million people since the program began with the loan of Claude Monet's masterpiece Meules, milieu du Jour [Haystacks, midday] to the Tweed Regional Gallery in November 2023.
In the first 2 years, 220 works of art from the national collection have been loaned through the program to 21 galleries in every state and territory across the country. Those galleries have reported an average 56% increase in visitation within the first 6 months of the loaned artworks going on display.
This impressive milestone for the program comes as its next loan is confirmed — 41 works of art will make their way to Mudgee Arts Precinct over the next 2 years as part of a rotating exhibition schedule. Featuring stunning prints from artists Willem de Kooning, Helen Frankenthaler, David Hockney, Roy Lichtenstein, Maurice Sendak, Frank Stella, Masami Teraoka and Andy Warhol, there will be plenty for visitors to the mid-western region of NSW to enjoy.
The Sharing the National Collection program allows for greater access and enjoyment of the national collection for art lovers across Australia. The program is funded under the National Cultural Policy, Revive.
